Soay Sheep Ovis aries Shoulder height 50-70cm The most ancient Sheep breed. Feral Soays are established in a few remote regions. Live in mixed-sex flocks. Adult coat is reddish brown in summer, darker and thicker in winter. Coat comprises thick, rigid hair and thin, curly wool. Male (ram) has curved, ribbed horns with a slight spiral twist; increase in length and curvature with age. Female (ewe) is smaller with shorter horns. Juvenile (lamb) resembles female, but with shorter, cleaner coat. Voice In lambing season, mothers and lambs utter the familiar ‘baaing’ and bleating calls respectively.
