RHODODENDRON Rhododendron ponticum (Ericaceae) Height to 5m. A popular, evergreen ornamental shrub that is naturalised in some areas. Favours acid, damp soils. FLOWERS are 4-6cm long, bell-shaped and pinkish red; borne in clusters (May-Jun). FRUITS are dry capsules that contain numerous, flat seeds. LEAVES are shiny, leathery, elliptical and dark green. STATUS-This species’ invasive habits, and ability to exclude native flora, means that its presence is often controlled.
