SEA PEA Lathyrus japonicus (Fabaceae) Height to 12cm
Spreading, grey-green perennial with stems up to 1m long. Entirely restricted to coastal shingle and sand. FLOWERS are 2cm long and purple, fading to blue; in heads of 2-15 flowers (Jun-Aug). FRUITS are swollen pods, 5cm long. LEAVES comprise 2-5 pairs of oval leaflets and angular stipules. STATUS-Mainly S and E England.
