Robert Read’s passion for landscape photography drew him into the arena of British natural history images. As well as managing NPL on a day-to-day basis, Rob still finds time to take stunning scenics and landscape shots from across the British Isles.   • Beech In Autumn, Savernake Forest, Wiltshire. Beech Fagus sylvatica Fagaceae Height to 40m. Imposing deciduous tree with domed crown. Bark Smooth and grey. Branches Ascending. Buds reddish, to 2cm long, smooth and pointed. Leaves To 10cm long, oval, pointed, with wavy margin. Reproductive parts Male flowers pendent, clustered. Female flowers paired with brownish bracts. Fruits are shiny 3-sided nuts, to 1.8cm long, enclosed in a prickly case. Status Common native in S England; widely planted elsewhere.

  • COMMON COTTONGRASS Eriophorum angustifolium (Cyperaceae) Height to 75cm. Upright perennial, distinctive when in fruit. Grows in very boggy ground with peaty, acid soils. FLOWERS are in inflorescences of drooping, stalked spikelets (Apr-May). FRUITS are dark brown with cottony hairs; fruiting heads resemble balls of cotton wool. LEAVES are dark green and narrow. STATUS-Locally common throughout.

  • Hairy Greenweed - Genista Pilosa. Height to 1m but often prostrate. Low growing shrub. It recalls Petty Whin but is spineless, and Dyer's Greenweed but its leaves are silvery-downy below. The flowers are yellow, in terminal heads (May-June). It grows on maritime heaths and sea cliffs. It is also found, locally, on the North Cornish coast and in West Wales.

  • Gannets -  Morus bassanus feeding on the ocean, Isles of Scilly, UK. W 165-180cm. Our largest seabird. Has deep, powerful wingbeats and glides on stiffly held wings. Bill is large and dagger-like. Dives from a height to catch fish. Sexes are similar. Adult has mainly white plumage with black wingtips; head has buffish wash. Juvenile has dark brown plumage speckled with white dots in first year; adult plumage acquired over next 4 years. Voice Silent at sea; nesting birds utter grating calls. Status Very locally common (3/4 of world population breeds here). Nests colonially but otherwise strictly marine.

  • Bluebells in Micheldever Woods, Hampshire. BLUEBELL Hycanithoides non-scripta (Liliaceae) Height to 50cm. Attractive and hairless, bulbous perennial that grows in woodland and also on coastal cliffs. In wooded areas where the management regime suits its needs (sympathetically coppiced Hazel is ideal) it forms extensive and continuous carpets on the woodland floor. FLOWERS are bell-shaped with 6 recurved lobes at the mouth, and are bluish purple (very occasionally pink or white); borne in 1-sided drooping-tipped spikes (Apr-Jun). FRUITS are capsules. LEAVES are long, 15mm wide, glossy green and all basal. STATUS-Widespread throughout the region and sometimes locally abundant.
